True Cuban Independence has been a dream for many generations of Cubans since Jose Marti's passion for a free Cuba first inspired the nation to fight the Spanish-American War in 1898. From 1092, when Cuba was granted a somewhat nominal independence by the United States, to the corrupt military rule of Fulgencio Batista, and ultimatley to the Fidel Castro/Che Guevara-led Cuban Revolution in 1959; combined with the resultant US Trade Embargo, Russian Economic Support, The Bay of Pigs and The Cuban Missle Crisis, the 20th Century has been an eventful time for this tiny nation. Cuba is at a crossroads, with Raul, Fidel's brother, solidly in control and loosening the government's grip on its citizens, private enterprise and entrepreneurship are surfacing. Where the next 100 years leads is yet to be written, but given the spirit, passion and hope of its people, it will be an adventure.
